Frankland's Yard

Frankland's Yard is a gem of a place. Lost in Lindsay Street, a back street of Kettering in Northamptonshire, Frankland's Yard is indicated simply by the cast iron street sign screwed high on the wall of the building. It is truely a step back into the past. A past whether remembered or just read about. A past not cluttered with electrically driven kitchen aids or fast foods. A past when things had to be made not of plastic but of iron and solid wood. It is a past world of dressers, great wood chests, monks' benches, drying racks, washboards, coffers and delightful little wooden baby rocking cots. In those days solid wood, pine, deal and iron were the everyday materials. The nobler oaks and mahoganies were used more for ornate display furniture used in the salons and tea-rooms of the day. What is unique about Frankland's Yard is that this age from 1800 on is brought back to life by skilful workmen restoring items; many saved often after having been cast aside, abused, crudely painted or even allowed to rot in outhouses. Stripped and refurbished to show their original glory, sanded and waxed to bring out the patina and wear of their age, they give both a reassuring look and a comfortable feeling.

For the serious homemaker who despises anything new, a visit to Frankland's Yard is a must. It is a place in which to ferret about and to find treasures that will enable your home to be a genuine replica of a bygone age. It is also one of those rare places that will happily repair and refurbish your own old furniture - a service very hard to find these days. Supporting these activities is Frankland's Stripping Srevice. With two stripping tanks including the biggest heated caustic tank in the county, a high quality stripping service is available for doors and furniture up to 8' x 5' in size. This service is used extensively by the Antique & Building trade and is also available to private customers.
